Preparing for surgery
My surgery has been scheduled. What should I do?
Several tests and examinations are required before surgery. As the procedure is planned, they can be completed a few days in advance. You will receive referrals for the necessary examinations and be told when they should be completed.
We recommend having the tests at our clinic. This allows us to receive the results automatically before the day of surgery and helps ensure that they are complete and available on time.
01Required tests and examinations
- Complete blood count
- Urinalysis
- Blood chemistry: glucose, bilirubin, urea, creatinine, potassium, sodium, alkaline phosphatase, amylase, AST and ALT
- Prothrombin test
- Blood clotting time
- HIV test
- Hepatitis B test
- Hepatitis C test
- Blood group and Rh factor — this must be provided on a separate laboratory form bearing the laboratory stamp; an entry in a passport is not sufficient
- Chest X-ray performed no more than six months before surgery
- ECG
02Preparing before surgery
- Stop taking aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, such as diclofenac and ibuprofen, one week before surgery. If you take aspirin for a heart, vascular or neurological condition, consult our doctor before making any change.
- If you take anticoagulant or other blood-thinning medication, you must consult our doctor.
- Bring all medicines that you take regularly at home.
- Do not eat or drink after 21:00 on the evening before surgery or on the morning of surgery.
- Take a shower on the evening before surgery or on the morning of surgery.
- If your doctor or anaesthetist has instructed you to take medicine before surgery, take it with a small amount of water.
- You will only need personal toiletries at the clinic; there is no need to bring a robe or other clothing.
- Do not bring food or valuables such as jewellery, an expensive phone or a watch.
03On the day of surgery
Arrive at the clinic at 08:30 on the scheduled day unless you have been given a different time. Bring your passport or identity card, a payment card or cash, and all test results if the tests were completed outside our clinic.
After registration and assessment by the anaesthetist, a member of staff will take you to the ward. Surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia: you will not feel the procedure and will wake up in the ward.
ONCOLOGICAL "GREEN CORRIDOR"
Receiving these services outside of the usual order is called the "green corridor".
Patients are provided with sequential diagnostics in the following order:
- The patient contacts his family doctor.
- The family doctor evaluates the patient's complaints and state of health.
- If the family doctor suspects cancer, he issues a special referral to certain state-funded examinations (eg mammography, ultrasound). These examinations are carried out within 10 working days from the day of registration and are not included in the amount of funds (quotas) allocated to the medical institution.
Patients with suspected cancer are examined outside the general queue: In the referral, the family doctor indicates a specific disease code and informs the patient how to sign up for examinations; When applying for a visit, the patient reports the special code specified in the instruction.
- After the examination, the family doctor examines the results of the examination.
- If the cancer diagnosis is confirmed or the doctor still suspects cancer, the family doctor issues a new referral to one of the specialized hospitals.
These consultations are also provided within 10 working days and are not included in the total funding of the institution.
For patients with suspected cancer, state-paid medical diagnostic services are provided as soon as possible in order to start timely treatment of patients and, if necessary, achieve better results.
